Analysis of national passenger car sales in May 2013

According to the statistical analysis by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, in May 2013, passenger car sales slightly decreased compared to the previous month but showed stable growth year-on-year. However, Chinese brands continued to perform poorly, with market share declining both month-on-month and year-on-year. From January to May, passenger car sales increased by 14.73% year-on-year, with the growth rate slightly falling compared to the first four months.
In May, a total of 1.3969 million passenger cars were sold, down 3.09% month-on-month and up 9.04% year-on-year. Among the main types of passenger cars, all four major categories saw slight declines in sales compared to the previous month. Year-on-year, the sales of crossover passenger cars still showed a significant decrease, basic passenger cars (sedans) had a slightly lower growth rate, while sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) continued to grow rapidly. In May, sales of basic passenger cars (sedans) reached 940,500 units, down 3.74% month-on-month and up 5.28% year-on-year. MPV sales reached 84,600 units, down 4.59% month-on-month and up by 110% year-on-year. SUV sales reached 227,900 units, almost flat with a slight decrease of 0.03% month-on-month but up 40.90% year-on-year. Sales of crossover passenger cars reached 143,900 units, down 2.63% month-on-month and down 22.52% year-on-year.
From January to May, a total of 7.2616 million passenger cars were sold, up 14.73% year-on-year, with the growth rate falling by 1.42 percentage points compared to the first four months. Among the main types of passenger cars, basic passenger cars (sedans) showed stable growth year-on-year; the growth rates of SUVs and MPVs slightly declined compared to the first four months; the crossover passenger car market continued to be sluggish. From January to May, sales of basic passenger cars (sedans) reached 4.8941 million units, up 12.67% year-on-year. MPV sales reached 483,100 units, up by 130% year-on-year. SUV sales reached 1.0893 million units, up 43.40% year-on-year. Sales of crossover passenger cars reached 795,100 units, down 21.95% year-on-year.
